Synopsis
Gus is an artist. Vanessa is an actress. Gus wants to be presented in a major exhibition for artists of color, so he hires Vanessa to perform as Balkonaé Townsend, a brash and political artist that will fit the museum’s desire for “new voices.” Everything is great, until Balkonaé takes over and Gus has to deal with the mess he’s made. This plays spins out of control as it explores issues of race, gender, sexuality, and art.
Character Breakdown
We are seeking actors of all ages, ethnicity, abilities, body types, and gender identities. Actors please submit for the roles with which you most strongly identify.
Gus – (Age: 30’s) White LGBTQ+ Male, an artist
Vanessa – (Age: 20-30’s) Black Female, the actress; later Balconae Townsend, an artist
Jane – (Age: 30’s) White Female, the curator
Tanner – (Age: 20-30’s) Asian LGBTQ+ male, Gus’ boyfriend
Intimacy Note
**There is a scene between Gus and Tanner that involves kissing and playful, loving, foreplay. This scene may have both roles without a shirt on and light butt slaps, but there will NOT be any nudity or simulated sex. Please only submit for the Gus or Tanner role if you are comfortable with these parameters. There will be an Intimacy Director on crew to help guide these scenes and ensure actor safety.

Auditions are by video submission only. To submit, please email headshot and resume to: auditions@scrippsranchtheatre.org. You will be asked to perform scenes from White.

Callbacks will be by invitation only August 20 & 21, 2024.

Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30PM
Sundays at 2:00PM
Rehearsals
Beginning January 14, rehearsals will generally be Tue-Fri from 6-10 PM, and Saturdays from 11:00 AM-3:00PM.
